Why Motion Matters?

Adding motion blur, especially in automotive photography, makes photos more dynamic. Motion blur allows the photo to capture a sense of speed, movement, and personality to the shot.

Simple Automotive Photography Tips

  • Start with continuous autofocus, use continuous autofocus, it allows the camer to track the subject.
  • Shoot during golden hour, allows you to shoot in softer light.
  • Avoid overexposure, balance shutter speed.

Get The Motion Blur

  • Use a shutter speed between 1/20-1/60.
  • Use your camera to track the car.
  • Keep your movements smooth.
  • PLAN PLAN PLAN, have a vision for the shot you are trying to take.

Setting up the Shot

I’m going to be talking about two type of rolliing shots: panning rollers and rolling shots that are shot with a lead car.

With these shots you want to make a panning motion in the same direction that the subjects vehicle is moving.

  • Stand parallel to the car
  • Move your camera at the same speed as the car.
  • Shoot while keeping your camera focused on the car.
  • Follow through after the shot.

When shooting with a lead car, it is important to disclose that these shots are typically captured by professionals on closed courses. For these types of rolling shots, you need to be securely harnessed into the car for safety and legal reasons. In these shots, you will have your subject (the car in the photos) and the lead car (the car the photographer is in).

The lead car will be in front of or slightly ahead and to the side of the subject vehicle, traveling at a similar speed. Use the same panning technique if the lead car is traveling next to the subject. If the lead car is directly ahead of the subject car, there is no need to pan while shooting; your low shutter speed will create the illusion of motion as long as the subject is in focus.

Once you master these techniques, you can try lowering your shutter speed to 1/10 of a second, but remember to keep STEADY HANDS. The most important factor for a clean shot is maintaining steady hands. If you choose to drop your shutter speed that low, ensure you are steady; otherwise, stay between 1/20 and 1/60 of a second. The lower the shutter speed, the more motion blur you will get.

Having the right photography techniques will set your work apart, producing clean and dynamic shots! And always remember to have fun and stay creative!
